I was given a small collection of hand carved stone cabochons from an estate sale. This sweet little scarab was carved from an oval black onyx stone.
The scarab is about 1.5 cm long. It is set into a hand formed sterling and fine silver bezel and surrounded by beaded sterling wire. It sits on a hammered sterling band in a size 7. All silver is oxidized and buffed for texture and an antiqued finish.
Scarabs were popular amulets and impression seals in Ancient Egypt. They survive in large numbers and, through their inscriptions and typology, they are an important source of information for archaeologists and historians of the ancient world.
